Theme: Career lessons
Key insights
- Oprah didn’t like being a journalist because she wasn’t allowed to use her key value of empathy, therefore it just didn’t feel right and she looked for alternative opportunities
- She didn’t plan her career as much as perhaps some of us may because of course in the 1970s for a black woman this was a lot harder than it is even today
- Luck is where preparation meets opportunity
- When she’s in the minority she draws on her heritage & all the strength of all the people that have gone before who’ve enabled her to be who she is – that’s who walks into the room.
- There is no such thing as failure. You get as much from your losses as you do from your victories because the losses are there to wake you up.
- Oprah asks every guest what advice they they would give to their younger selves & in one way or another they all answer “relax, it’s going to be ok.”
- Always be thinking, what is the next right move & don’t be overwhelmed by it.
- Everyone Oprah has ever interviewed from murderer to politician and from Obama to Beyonce, has asked her the same question at the end of the interview “Was that ok?”.
- All anyone ever wants to know is “Do you see me? Do you hear me? And, does what I say matter to you?” Every argument will come down to this – wise words to remember because it is almost always true!
