Theme: Career lessons

Key insights
  1. Oprah didn’t like being a journalist because she wasn’t allowed to use her key value of empathy, therefore it just didn’t feel right and she looked for alternative opportunities
  2. She didn’t plan her career as much as perhaps some of us may because of course in the 1970s for a black woman this was a lot harder than it is even today
  3. Luck is where preparation meets opportunity
  4. When she’s in the minority she draws on her heritage & all the strength of all the people that have gone before who’ve enabled her to be who she is – that’s who walks into the room.
  5. There is no such thing as failure. You get as much from your losses as you do from your victories because the losses are there to wake you up.
  6. Oprah asks every guest what advice they they would give to their younger selves & in one way or another they all answer “relax, it’s going to be ok.”
  7. Always be thinking, what is the next right move & don’t be overwhelmed by it.
  8. Everyone Oprah has ever interviewed from murderer to politician and from Obama to Beyonce, has asked her the same question at the end of the interview “Was that ok?”.
  9. All anyone ever wants to know is “Do you see me? Do you hear me? And, does what I say matter to you?” Every argument will come down to this – wise words to remember because it is almost always true!
